The Home Summer Camp Guide

As parents, as much as we love our kids, if we’re being completely honest, the approach of summer break can bring a tiny bit of “parental panic” with it. Between the costs of sleepaway camps and the logistics of morning drop-offs, (not to mention the dreaded “waitlists” for the local pool), the dream of a relaxing summer can quickly turn into a second full-time job for parents.

But what if your 2026 summer camp wasn’t across town? What if it was located just twenty feet past your back door? At Adventure World Playsets, we’ve seen parents do incredible things with their backyard spaces. Your playset is more than just a place to burn off energy; it’s a high-performance “headquarters” for a DIY summer of imagination. Here is how you can use your vinyl playset to host the ultimate Home Summer Camp.

Backyard Playset

Week 1: Nature Explorer Week

The best way to kick off summer is by reconnecting with the great outdoors! Use your playset tower as a “High-Altitude Research Station.”

  • Give the kids a pair of binoculars and a field journal. From the safety of the tower deck, they can document the local wildlife, such as birds, squirrels, even the neighbor’s cat! Show them how to check out the same areas or the same critters at different hours of the day, find patterns or things that jump out of the ordinary.
  • The shaded area underneath an Adventure World tower is the perfect spot for a small nature collection table. Kids can bring back rocks, leaves, and sticks to categorize them out of the heat of the sun.

Week 2: Backyard Olympics

There is nothing like a little friendly competition to keep the kids moving and fully motivated! Try out these activities (and any others you come up with), and mix them around throughout the week. Make medals out of cardstock or cardboard, which is also an activity you can do as a family.

  • Create a timed obstacle course; start the clock as they sprint to the rock wall, scramble up to the deck, navigate across the bridge, and finish with a trip down the slide.
  • Use the monkey bars for a “strength challenge”, trying to get from one end to the other.
  • Swings are great for a “target kick”, where kids try to kick a soft playground ball into a laundry basket placed a safe distance away.

Week 3: Theater in the Park

Does your playset have a lemonade stand or a storefront attachment? If so, you have a ready-made box office! If not, a small table or even a chair will do the job.

  • Have your kids sit down, brainstorm and write a play that they will later perform. The tower deck serves as the main stage, and the grass below becomes the front row for the parents. A couple of days of that week can be used for rehearsals and another day can be used to make the tickets, programs and even the snacks!
  • Use the storefront for intermission snacks or as a ticket booth.

Week 4: Science Week

School may be out but the backyard is the ultimate laboratory! It’s great because the work is not done to get a grade but to truly have fun experimenting. Get your kids a notebook and have them keep a Science Diary.

  • Test the laws of physics! Have kids do “gravity races” by sliding different objects (a tennis ball vs. a toy car) down the slide to see which reaches the bottom first.
  • On a hot day, bring a bucket of water up to the deck. Using plastic funnels and tubes, create a “Water Fall” over the side. It’s a great way to talk about flow and motion while staying cool.
  • Go online to find easy to do children’s experiments requiring basic ingredients that you can find at home and set up a small “lab” in the tower to work on them.

Week 5: The Great Backyard Sleepover

The grand finale of the Home Summer Camp!

  • If your tower deck is large enough, toss a couple of sleeping bags for a camp-In. It feels like camping on Mt. Everest to a child, but you know they are just a few steps away from their own bathroom and a kitchen full of snacks!
  • If the deck is too small to hold all your kids, set up a tent right next to the playset. Hang some battery-operated lanterns on the beams to light up the area.
  • Spend the twilight hours on the swings, watching the stars come out. Listen to the sounds of crickets and birds  before tucking in for the night. If you have a garden firepit, finish the summer season with s’mores and campfire songs.
Backyard Playset

The beauty of hosting your own Summer Camp is that you control the schedule. There are no early morning rushes and no “I forgot my lunch” phone calls. When you invest in an Adventure World Playset, you aren’t just buying a playset, you’re buying a summer’s worth of freedom for many summers to come!

Our sets are built to be safe enough that you can let your children play independently while you enjoy a cup of coffee on the patio, but they are also sturdy enough that you can climb up there and join in the fun whenever you want.

This summer, the best memories are waiting for you right in your own backyard.
