Environmentally Friendly Playgrounds
Mankind has fortunately become aware of the impact that many of our activities have on the environment and ultimately, our whole planet. It is no surprise that nowadays, people decide to go for eco-friendly products and services and towards creating ways to live and play sustainably and this includes outdoor furniture and play sets, as families look to provide planet-friendly, fun and attractive spaces for children to play while reducing their ecological footprint.
An environmentally-friendly Playground is a Space to Play In
That has been designed to minimize its impact on the environment. An important thing to consider when talking about objects and materials that go outdoors, is that quality plastic is not always an enemy, but can be quite the opposite. For example, environmentally-friendly swing sets that are made of wood would rot and decay in a few years if not treated chemically, painted or stained periodically, or cleaned with special cleaners.
Environmentally Friendly Swing Sets
A playset that is made of strong, sturdy, pressure-treated lumber that is encased in a vinyl sleeve, will guarantee its longevity since the wood will be protected from dampness, rot, mold and bug infestations and resist for decades. Also, the vinyl and the swings, slides and other strong plastic features make the playset easy to clean, requiring no more than a cloth and water to wipe them down, not even a detergent is needed.
Swing sets and playsets should be designed to be sustainable over the long run; this means that they should be built to last, as well as easily maintained and repaired when necessary.
Safety is a main concern in any playground which is why many playsets are built on a bed of mulch; the two most popular materials for this are wood mulch, most commonly made of tree bark, wood chips, grass and leaves clippings and straw, and rubber mulch, usually made from tire waste.
While wood mulch is organic, one must consider that it could develop fungus and it tends to compact, making it necessary to replenish every year. Rubber mulch is not organic but it is an eco-friendly way to deal with tire waste and it lasts for years without having to replenish it. Also, it provides excellent drainage and supplies insulation against cold weather.
Feature In Sustainable Playgrounds and Swing Sets
Another feature in sustainable playgrounds is that they can use rainwater as a source of irrigation, eliminating the need for traditional watering systems that can be expensive, harm the environment, and let a lot of rainwater go to waste!
Solar panels will allow for a swing set to light up in the evenings and let children continue playing after dark, and also make it an inviting and safe place to hang out in!
Disposing of garbage will always be a main concern, which is why it is important to keep color-coded, lidded trash cans to dispose of food, wrappings and other items responsibly.
As more people and more communities embrace environmentally friendly playgrounds, we can expect to have safer, healthier and sustainable play spaces for children all over the world.
