No one knows who invented them as such, although some credit goes to Charles Wicksteed since one of his prototypes dating back to the 1930’s. These prototypes were discovered in 2013 in the UK.

We also know they have been around since Ancient Greece. Because historians have found paintings of them on vases dating back to the 5th century BC. Dating back even further, we can say that history has seen swinging since maybe even more primitive times when people used to hang onto vines that grew naturally on trees, just for fun!
